“Girls Invented Punk Rock..!” An ode to some heroes!!!!
Apr 21, 2026
Hey,
I hope you’re doing great! It’s Monday afternoon right now... I know, this is a little odd as I normally write those on weekend mornings, but this past Saturday has been quite crazy with the From the City to the Ocean vinyl sold out! What a celebration this has been for us, giving birth to an unforgettable Record Store Day! Forever thankful to you all who made this possible!
It’s now time for Alex and I to record countless audio messages and to make sure all your wonderful packages are ready to be shipped by this upcoming Monday, as we’re leaving for Frankfurt to act as postmen!!! Can’t wait!!!
Since we’re still walking on the water following the incredible past few weeks we spent around From the City to the Ocean, I wanted to share with you some of my favorite bass players today...!
Hope you’ll enjoy it!
🎧 Music I’m listening to
Auf Der Maur album from Melissa Auf Der Maur
Alex introduced me to her music back in 2004, and to this day, this album will be spun a few times a year and always makes me feel how much of a masterpiece this album is...!
Melissa is from Montreal and I had the chance to meet her only once! She’s an incredible artist and such a great bass player! I’m very delighted to share this with you!

📖 Reading highlight I’m pondering
- Kim Gordon
To me, Kim Gordon is the ultimate representation when it comes to the definition of punk rock! Even her last album, Play Me, has been spinning non stop ever since her first single came out, as I think it’s the best record done by any Sonic Youth member since they disbanded!
When you think about punk rock, what do you see? Iggy, Johnny? Sid? Joe? Joey? For me, Kim Gordon is a true artist. She didn’t — and still doesn’t — fit any definable mold, not because she followed rules, but because she helped rewrite them.
She redefined what a woman could be in a punk band. In a scene that often leaned male and aggressive in a narrow way, Gordon brought a different kind of presence, detached, confrontational, intellectual, and artistic. She didn’t perform femininity in a conventional sense, and she didn’t imitate male energy either. That helped open the door for later movements, where women claimed space on their own terms.
In short: Kim Gordon didn’t just contribute to punk, she helped evolve it into something more expansive, more inclusive, and more artistically ambitious. In that sense, it wasn’t Kim’s bass performances that inspired me, but how she impacted and still transcends music, art, by her attitude, her autonomy resisting commodification, and questioning authority. Kim embodied that in how she navigated the industry, maintained creative control, and avoided becoming a cliché of rock stardom.
🎙️ Podcast That Inspired Me
Melissa Auf Der Maur - The Magnificent Others with Billy Corgan
I really enjoyed every moment shared in this podcast as they navigate through the early 90s grunge scene, Montreal, what it means to be in a band, the passing of Kurt Cobain, their relationship with Courtney Love and how both of them changed pop culture forever!
📸 My Picture Of The Week
I went to the Angine de Poitrine concert last Saturday at the Club Soda as, like Alex shared with you last week, we’re the ones who are pressing their vinyls! So proud to be involved in such a strange, cool, unique, and impressive musical journey and collective!
It feels great to see Montreal be back on the worldwide music stage again!

💬 Shared in the Long Shadows Chat this week
I know we just finished an incredible campaign around Record Store Day and the release of From the City to the Ocean, but I wouldn’t be honest if I didn't share what really gained a lot of traction in our band’s chat last week!
Last Sunday night, Alex invited us all to a 5pm multi continent party (America and Africa) via FaceTime as he wanted to congratulate us all for the campaign but also — and especially — show us the up and coming record we’ve been working on for a little while now..!
We’re getting closer and closer my friends! We heard new songs! We saw new visuals! Can’t wait to share those with you!!!!
Thank you all so very much again!
Let’s be great to one another!
Your friend and Chief Operator,
Jeff
