AS LONG AS THE HEART

AS LONG AS THE HEART

Since 2020 marks a renaissance of sorts for me, after drifting for quite some time, it’s important for me that our club incarnates that cheerful gratefulness that I experience now in the simplest of all possible ways. I believe we all need to get back to the essence of togetherness as our human nature fundamentally longs for, more so now than ever.

And in all the splendors of our differences, in all the magnificence of what guides us to open up to one another, if only a little and for a brief instant. At least, that’s my engagement towards everyone and my invitation to anyone who wants to join me and to add a new color to the bright lights coming in. I also believe this goes perfectly well with this year’s theme, “As Long as the Heart…”, which is for us all to define…

RED BUFFALO ILLUSTRATION

"Since I came back from Tangier in 2018 and decided to get back into the light through the release of my first musical solo project, the conceptual nature of collaborations became the center of my creative endeavors from both a sonic and visual standpoint. From The Long Shadows' musicians, up to French video director Jessy Nottola, all are important figures of the communal vision I have for my artistic voyage, which is now also defined by the tremendously talented American illustrator Joe Mruk.

We exchanged a few ideas, but I didn’t want to pigeon hole his perspectives. In fact, What always prevails for me when it comes to collaborations is to give all the creative freedom necessary to spark any inspirational visions in the people I team up with.

I believe that since Joe and I went through similar life experiences, it inspired a more profound sense of understanding between us, which has undeniably contributed to giving Joe’s amazing illustrative piece of art a much more significant imprint in its emotional implications. That’s how I received the visual identity of As Long as the Heart that Joe has crafted; a true incarnation of life rather than a beautiful depiction of what we may want life to be seen as…

Thanks to Joe’s total dedication to the project, I still have the blessing to discover some elements I hadn’t perceived before and find much more depth in details I might have overlooked at first. It feels like healing over redemption. Forgiveness over restitution. Peace over reclamation. Or it might be everything that I need to see as I am going through our present distressing time."

Q: ALEX HAS WANTED TO WORK WITH YOU FOR A WHILE AND IT WAS IMPORTANT TO INTRODUCE YOU TO HIS PEOPLE. WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO WORK ON “AS LONG AS THE HEART” KNOWING JUST HOW PERSONAL HIS ALBUM “WINDOWS IN THE SKY” IS?

A: It's always intense in a way knowing you're approaching someone's work from a peripheral angle, intermingling your thoughts with that which you perceive of theirs. Especially if that work feels intensely personal. But this project wasn't difficult at all, because I found a lot of myself reflected in Alex's music and went with those impulses.

Q: WHAT WAS THE PIVOTAL MOMENT WHEN YOU KNEW “OK, THAT’S THE IDEA, THAT’S THE CENTRAL ELEMENT I WAS LOOKING FOR”?

A: For Alex, the pivotal moment was visualizing a physical landscape, or series of landscapes, when listening to "Windows in the Sky" and trying to sharpen how those felt to me in a rough draft. Of course, I couldn't use every element I thought of, so I had to choose some of the most resonant ones. The album gave me a lot of architectural ideas that weren't quite modern, or connected with a much older people than ours. The dramatic sweep of the record helped to give me the vibe I'd like to connect with the architecture, which I wanted to look windswept, overgrown and private.
