The only truth is music
Feb 04, 2025
Hey,
I hope you’re doing well! It’s Sunday morning, around 11, and I’m at my office coming back from a nice walk outside by the beach, by the beautiful bay of Tangier, under its clear blue sky where the only thing you hear is the wind, the waves, and the seagulls. Love those morning walks, not being engaged in any kind of destinations, no real purpose other than being connected to what surrounds me, attentive to details, acting like a receptacle waiting to be touched, moved, for my mind and spirit to travel time, age, and space toward something greater and brand new.
It’s not always that simple, unfortunately… But I like to force myself into getting out of the daily noise, out of our self-imposed stress and poisonous anxiety, even if it’s only for a few minutes! Being in Tangier really helps for that (opposed to Drummondville, where the forecast indicates -22° Celsius / -7° Fahrenheit). I feel for you, my dear friends from La Belle Province!
As I shared with you last week, Alex’s music is not something that comes up easily, as even if it did, we would not trust it, especially Alex. For him, what comes easy is to be tested, is to be challenged. Even if we’re all there, in our studio with our instruments in our hands, it doesn’t mean something will come up to us. So, as we did yesterday, it’s sometimes better to go for a walk and unite rather than look at each other while becoming more and more mad because things are not precisely going as planned!
When we stopped walking yesterday and went up on that 10th-floor terrace, it felt like not only time had stopped but as if all of our spirits got aligned with why we were precisely there, in Tangier, at this particular time of our lives. We spent a few minutes in silence, simply inviting the moment and the scenery to take the lead on all our eagerness to touch what seemed impossible, as if every truth we knew simply removed their own masks all at the same time, revealing they were all illusions in the end. It’s precisely when those moments occur that we all have to be careful about what comes out of our mouths, because if we decide to abandon ourselves in the arms of bitterness and discouragement, as we too often did in the past, this can lead toward a journey we all know too well…

Alex started speaking about what Jack Kerouac said: “The only truth is music.”
And he went around something like “The truth is in the music because music is one of the purest forms of human expression. Unlike words that can be manipulated or actions that can be performed with ulterior motives, music comes from an unfiltered place: unfiltered emotions, unfiltered experiences, and raw feelings.”
"Music holds the truth because it speaks where words fail. It tells the stories we’re afraid to say out loud, reflects emotions we might not even fully understand, and connects us in ways beyond logic or explanation."
Truth in music isn’t about perfection; it’s about intention. A song can be technically flawless but feel empty if it lacks sincerity. On the other hand, a raw, imperfect performance can carry the weight of a lifetime’s worth of meaning.
Ultimately, music holds the truth because it speaks where words fail. It tells the stories we’re afraid to say out loud, reflects emotions we might not even fully understand, and connects us in ways beyond logic or explanation. That’s why, when it’s real, people feel it. We can’t escape it! We have to keep walking on that path all together, no matter how imperfect it is or how we feel about it.
We all walked back to the studio in such a mood, and the first thing we did when we arrived was all around music! A great week is rising ahead! Can’t wait to share it with you next Tuesday!
Let’s be great to one another!
